YUMA, AZ - Last week, Clara Ines Garavito-Medina, 62, was convicted in federal court of re-entry of a removed alien.
In February, she was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol agents after crossing into the country illegally, near the San Luis/ Arizona Port of Entry.
In a news release, U.S. Border Patrol Yuma Sector stated:
U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Yuma Station apprehended Garavito-Medina earlier this year and discovered she was a felon convicted of attempted murder of a New York police officer.
In 1995, Garavito-Medina was arrested in New York City after trying to shoot a police officer on the street.
The Colombian national, who reportedly has at least 13 aliases, was convicted of attempted first-degree murder, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal possession of a loaded firearm.
Garavito-Medina spent 18 years in a New York state prison and was subsequently deported back to Colombia.
Upon her latest conviction, she was sentenced to two years in federal prison.
