Name: Paulino Chavez Lopez Age: 31
Location: Burke County Date of Arrest: 08/27/2020
Charge(s): Statutory rape of a child by an adult, statutory sex offense with a child by an adult, first-degree kidnapping and a misdemeanor probation violation
The News Herald reported:
The charges came after Lopez, formerly of Edgewood Avenue in Morganton, was indicted May 1, 2017.
A grand jury of 12 or more jurors found enough probable cause to indict Lopez for the rape and kidnapping of a 12-year-old girl on or about Feb. 24-28, 2017, a copy of the indictment said.
The Guatemalan national fled the state, though details on how he was allowed to give local law enforcement the slip are still sketchy at this time.
However, the U.S. Border Patrol recently apprehended Lopez near the U.S./Mexican border, and extradited him back to North Carolina.
Lopez, who has a previous arrest for DUI, is currently being held at the Burke County Jail on $510,000 bond, as well as an ICE detainer.
His next court appearance is set for September 17.
