INDIO, CA – On Tuesday, Miguel Mejia Cazarez, 38, was arraigned at the Banning Justice Center for the fatal shooting of 39-year-old Jose Luis Villegas.
On January 12, police were called to a business on Avenue 44, after a vehicle crashed into the fence. Officers discovered the driver was suffering from what would be fatal a gunshot wound. Villegas died at the scene.
An investigation determined that the victim had been shot following a confrontation with the accused, according to court documents.
Cazarez has been charged with first-degree murder, hit-and-run, discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury, driving without a license and failing to provide proof of insurance. He is currently being held at the Smith Correctional Facility on $1 million bail.
